Wamakko Commissions Renewable Energy Model Village

Sokoto State Governor

Sokoto State governor Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko yesterday commissioned an integrated renewable energy powered model project in Danjawa village of Wamakko local government  area of Sokoto. While commissioning the project, Wamakko lamented that epileptic and perennial power supply has crippled most industries in Nigeria. Even as he stressed that, solar photovoltaic off grid electrification project was cost efficient and more reliable.

Represented by Hon. Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Mohammadu Jabbi Kilgori, governor Wamakko assured people of Sokoto State that the government was working on an independent power plant already. The application of renewable energy systems as initiated by the Usmanu Danfodio University Sokoto Energy Research Centre was aimed at providing off grid electrification.

The 10KW solar photovoltaic off grid electrification project provides Danwaja village (the pilot village) with a 12-hour power supply for lighting, cooling (fan), T.V, radio and refrigerator.  Speaking at an international workshop on model rural village through the application of renewable energy system tagged “Renewable Energy Technologies and Application for Sustainable Development” Vice-Chancellor Usmanu Danfodio University, Professor Riskuwa Arabu Shehu said the development would have  tremendous impact on the larger society.

Professor Riskuwa also noted that until serious attention was given to the optimal development, utilization and security of our energy needs Nigeria would not have a productive economy. Earlier in the workshop, Director General/Chief Executive Officer Energy Commission of Nigeria and Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Energy Matters, Professor Abubakar Sani Sambo, represented by Professor Idris Bugaje, commended the research effort of Usmanu Danfodiu University Sokoto.

He said the Sokoto Energy Research Centre was one of the oldest renewable energy centres established by the Federal Government of Nigeria to undertake research and development activities in renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, biomass, small hydro and lots more. On his part, Director Sokoto Energy Research Centre, Professor Bashir Danshehu said no fewer than 70% of Sub-Saharan African population lack electricity. Adding that, over 80% of this population lives in rural areas.
