Malam Abubakar Muhammed, the Director-General, National Directorate of Employment (NDE), on Friday called for more funding for renewable energy projects at all levels. Muhammed made the call in Akure when 50 trainees under an NDE programme were receiving starter tools for business in solar energy technology.

Mohammed, who was represented by Mr Kunle Obayan, the Director in charge of Small Scale Enterprises in NDE, said if there was more investment in renewable technology, more employment would be generated. He said that the training was to enable them explore areas such as solar energy systems to help to address Nigeria’s power generation shortfalls.

“We believe that the trainees in renewable energy will transform their knowledge to discovering new sources of energy and create employment potential for others. “Especially, solar energy is capable of generating employment in geometrical proportion; in design, harvesting, installation, and maintenance of solar energy gadgets,’’ he said. He appealed to unemployed youths to take advantage of the various job generating efforts of the directorate to acquire new skills and upgrade themselves to play significant roles in the economy.

The NDE Coordinator in Ondo State, Mr Joseph Olayinka, said that more people would be trained on renewable energy technology and empowered to start their own businesses. He said that there was need for greater collaboration between the directorate and the state government for capacity building to develop renewable energy technology.

Two beneficiaries of Friday’s NDE programme in Akure, Messrs Samuel Afariogun and Sunday Israel told NAN that they had registered a company known as “Sunking Technology“ to take alternative energy technology to the grassroots. They, however, appealed to the directorate to further empower them with solar generating equipment for installation and to do the business effectively. (NAN)
