Ladi Balogun, MD FCMB

First City Monument Bank Plc has supported the Lagos State Electricity Board’s Renewable Energy project by funding 2,500 rechargeable solar lamps for  distribution to school children. The Lagos State Electricity Board’s Renewable Energy project aims to maximise power supply through independent power projects and improving public lighting for the citizens of the state.

According to a statement by FCMB, a remarkable aspect of the initiative is the provision of solar light bulbs to students and the rural communities.  The bank’s  Group Head, Corporate Communications, Mr. Ikechukwu Kalu, said, “We have participated in this Renewable Energy project in partnership with the Lagos State Electricity Board because the project is in line with the moral direction of giving back to society, which we share with the Lagos State Government. At FCMB, we believe that the communities in which we operate must benefit from our presence”.

Kalu added, “The rechargeable solar energy lamps will not only support the beneficiaries in their quest for knowledge, which will eventually lead many out of the vicious cycle of poverty, but provide opportunity  for students to be introduced to the essential paradigm of renewable energy and environmental sustainability”.  General Manager, Lagos State Electricity Board,Mr. Damilola Ogunbiyi, said  that the provision of solar light bulbs to school children in the state by FCMB would have a significant impact on their living conditions.

“Our aim in providing solar bulbs for school children is to enhance their efficiency and promote studying habits in them. We see FCMB as not only our bankers, but also as our energy development partners in this laudable initiative”, he said. Since the inception of FCMB’s Corporate Social Responsibility  Unit, the bank said it had partnered  the Lagos State Government on a number of initiatives to the benefit of its host communities. Specifically, the bank added that it  had supported the Lagos State Environmental Sustainability drive in line with its focal areas of Poverty Alleviation, Economic Empowerment and Environmental Sustainability.
