The security of energy supply and climate change are the principal factors motivating the consideration of the alternative to fossil fuels in the near-to-medium-term. However, the desirability of securing national energy supply exploitation of indigenous resources as well as the associated benefit of avoiding the excessive transfer of wealth in exchange for driving dependants of’ crude to invest in research, and development of alternative energy.

The Renewable Energy Programme is initiated by the Federal Ministry of Environment in fulfillment of the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s obligation to the United Nations Framework on Climate Change (UNFCC) and as part of African strategy on voluntary emission reduction. The programme is developed as mitigation tool by Nigeria in response to the UNFCCC Accord, which includes:

  • The commitments emission reduction targets and mitigation action by developing countries by 2020.
  • Short term fun ding for immediate action and long term financing.
  • Mechanisms to support technology transfer.

The world is becoming increasingly environmentally clean and friendly, as countries are shifting to and promoting the use of cleaner energy sources that are renewable. Renewable energy projects in many developing countries have demonstrated that renewable energy can directly contribute to poverty alleviation by providing the energy needed for creating businesses and employment and can also make Indirect contributions to alleviating poverty. The Federal Ministry of Environment’s Renewable Energy Programme is targeted at stimulating the sector that is viable enough to attract capital to develop renewable energy technologies in Nigeria.
